2011 Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair Court Crowned
On Wednesday April 6th, six girls competed for two titles: Miss Tulelake and Miss Butte Valley. A panel of 5 judges conducted the interviews.
The applicants from Butte Valley were Delaney Helms, Ruby Gonzalez, Haley Reynolds, and Kara Porterfield. The Tulelake applicants included Madee Boyd, and Karra Mahan.
The Committee of judges, who were very impressed with the quality and depth of the applicants, selected Kara Porterfield as Miss Butte Valley and Karra Mahan as Miss Tulelake, both of which will be eligible to receive a scholarship to help further their continued education.
Kara Porterfield is a 15 year old Sophomore at Butte-Valley High school. Kara is the daughter of Chet & Tara Porterfield. She has one sister Kady. She enjoys horseback riding, basketball, softball, volleyball, and reading.
Kara is friendly, easy to get along with and values her friendships. She likes to keep life simple, enjoys helping others and is proud to be a cowgirl. She is very involved at BVHS and with the Butte Valley community. She is or has been a member of the volleyball, basketball, and track teams at BVHS; she has served as the 2013 class secretary & treasure, she is a member of the BV FFA and is the current chapter secretary, Kara is a member of BVHS California Scholarship Federation (CSF), has or is still currently involved in B.V. PAWS, B.V. GATE, Butte Valley 4-H, 2008 People to People Student Ambassador to England, Ireland, and Whales, Tulelake-Butte Valley Jr. Fairboard, Butte Valley Stars Cheerleader, Macdoel Assembly of God Church Mega Sports Camp volunteer coach, and YMCA Basketball and Little league softball team member.
After graduating from BVHS Kara plans to continue on to a 4-year college to study agriculture. After college she wants to return to the ranching business and work toward owning her own cattle and horse ranch.
Karra Mahan is a 16 year old Junior at Tulelake High School. Kara is the daughter of Mark and Amanda Mahan. She has one sister Keira. Reading, travelling, scrapbooking, and scuba diving are some of the things Kara enjoys however she is also enjoys spending time with her family.
Kara is a hard-working, compassionate and person who loves to learn and meet new people. Kara is involved in FFA, FBLA, and Academic Decathlon. She is a member of the Track & Field Team is the class president for the class of 2012 and is involved in Basin Youth for Christ.
After graduating from THS Karra plans to attend college at Oregon Institute of Technology, to major in Medical Imaging and one day be an Ultrasound Technologist. She would also like to study abroad in Spain to learn Spanish.
As hostesses of the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair the girls look forward to rising to the occasion of representing their fair at various festivals and fairs this summer and fall. Some of the venues the Fair Court has attended in the past include, Siskiyou Golden Fair, Klamath County Fair, Modoc District Fair, and Dorris & Tulelake 4th of July Celebrations. The highlight of the girl’s rein will be representing the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair as they each attend to their royal duties throughout the duration of the fair September 8th -11th. As the fair approaches, listen for the girls on the radio as they will be keeping the public informed of events going on during this year at the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair where we will be celebrating out theme of “Big Dreams in a Small Town”!
